Y foel - The First Certified PassivHaus in the UK - a Q50 Air permeability of 0.25m3/hr/m2

Y foel is a private house in Wales with visionary owners who commissioned JPW Construction to achieve PassivHaus certification. The property is 2 or 3 bedroom.

The construction is an external I beam timber frame with an internal core of earth block walls in the ground floor only, with Welsh slate floor slabs on 60% GGBS (ground granulated blastfurnace slag) in situ slab. The wall panels were fabricated on the in-situ slab on site and pivoted into position as the house has limited access. Pre-manufactured I beam roof trusses were lifted individually. By reducing the number of individual panels thermal bridging was also reduced at panel joins.

The twin vault system was placed outside of the thermal/air tight envelope to ensure air tightness. Using the pro clima airtight building system, which utilises Intello Plus Intelligent airtight vapour check along with pro clima’s Tescon No 1 tape and Orcon F glue Y foel achieved a permeability result: n50 = 0.247-1 @ 50Pa (PassivHaus Institute requirement is 0.6) or a Q50 = 0.250m3/(h.m2) 50 Pa (UK measurement).

Our Technical Engineer Niall Crosson visited the site and found the level of detailing and on site workmanship to be one of the best projects he’d seen and that’s evident in the result.
