Thermafleece
Thermafleece is a high density, wool rich insulation that is the first choice when maximum thermal and acoustic performance and breathability are required or in space limited situations.
Manufactured to meet the highest quality and performance standards and using British sheep’s wool, Thermafleece is the only wool based insulation to hold BBA certification.
Thermafleece has a thermal conductivity of 0.039W/mK and is available in a variety of dimensions suitable for all your appication needs.Thermafleece is supplied in slab form with standard lenghts of 1200mm with three thickness, 50mm,75mm and 100mm and two widths, 400mm and 600mm.
Thermafleece PB20 is as a lower density, compressed roll insulation that is easy to handle and install in confined spaces such as lofts. Thermafleece PB20 contains a lower quantity of wool than Thermafleece (60% compared to 85%).Because Thermafleece PB20 is compress packed, it is necessary to incorporate a proportion of recycled polyester fibres to ensure the insulation regains its full thickness when un-rolled.
Compressing the rolls by approximately 60% significantly reduces the impact of transporting the finished product and nearly halves the required storage space for the same volume of insulation.
Thermafleece PB20 has a thermal conductivity of 0.042 W/mK and is available in roll forms in widths of 370mm to enable quick and easy installation. Each roll contains a single 5.3m lenght of insulation and is available in a thickness of 100mm.

When insulating a new building or when renovating an existing building, the required insulation performance (U Value) is covered by Building Regulation Part L 2006. In addition the Code for Sustainable Homes was introduced in May 2008 which requires a higher standard of insulation performance depending on the code level required. For further information on U Values and the Code for Sustainable Homes, please contact Ecological Building SystemsTechnical department.
Insulation Requirements
The required depth of insulation is achieved by multi-layering to suit the void to be insulated. The range of available thickness and sizes are:
| Type | Thickness | Length | Width | K Value W/mK |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thermafleece | 50mm | 1200mm | 600 & 400mm | 0.038 W/mK |
| Thermafleece | 75mm | 1200mm | 600 & 400mm | 0.038 W/mK |
| Thermafleece | 100mm | 1200mm | 600 & 400mm | 0.038 W/mK |
| Thermafleece PB20 | 70mm | 7600mm | 570mm | 0.039 W/mK |
| Thermafleece PB20 | 100mm | 5300mm | 570 & 370mm | 0.039 W/mK |
Typical U Values
The overall insulation values being considered will determine the overall depth of Thermafleece or Thermafleece PB20 required. To achieve Building Regulation or better, in a loft application, the following thicknesses are required:
| Type | Overall Thickness | Between Rafter | Over Rafter | U Value W/m2K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thermafleece | 225mm | 100mm | 125mm | 0.16 |
| Thermafleece PB20 | 240mm | 100mm | 140mm | 0.16 |
| Thermafleece | 275mm | 100mm | 175mm | 0.13 |
| Thermafleece PB20 | 270mm | 100mm | 170mm | 0.14 |
| Thermafleece | 300mm | 100mm | 200mm | 0.12 |
| Thermafleece PB20 | 300mm | 100mm | 200mm | 0.13 |
| Thermafleece | 350mm | 100mm | 250mm | 0.11 |
| Thermafleece PB20 | 355mm | 100mm | 255mm | 0.11 |
Figures are in line with BS EN ISO 6946 based on a standard roof truss at 600mm centres including BRE 443:2006 allowance for additional timber noggins and loft hatch requirements.

Fields of Application
- Insulation between the rafters.
- Insulation on the rafters and between supporting rafters.
- Insulation under the rafters.
- Insulation of wooden joists in ceilings.
- Insulation of the internal and external walls in timber frame, and post and beam constructions.
- Insulation of metal studded constructions or partitions.
- Internal dry-lining insulation in the refurbishment of masonary/solid constructions.
- Exterior insulation of walls with a well ventilated air layer.
- The lower the vapour sealing effect achieved, the more this natural insulation material can deliver its range of advantages.
- Ensure there is adequate ventilation during installation.
- To ensure the installation is achieved without gaps (joints) please oversize the insulation with an extra 20-30mm relative to the void to be insulated.
- Ensure a suitable sealed vapour check is applied and that the construction is sealed airtightly immediately after the insulation is installed.
Measuring Up
Deciding On Your Dimensions
The dimensions of insulating material required are determined by the construction dimensions. To determine this, the space between rafters should be measured & 2-3cm should be added to the final measurements. These additional centimetres are used to avoid a heat build-up and will also allow for the clamping of the mats. Where the thickness of the insulation material is less than 100mm, the mats should also be tucked.
Tool Requirements
Small Quantities
Thermo-Hemp can be cut to size with simple cutting tools like an insulating cutter. A long blade with a wave-like cut gives the best results.
Large Quantities
For this purpose an electric-handsaw with a wave-cut blade will give you the best results. (Bosh GFZ 16-35 AC).
