Thermal Plaster Tackles Damp & Thermal Performance

Ecological Building Systems worked in collaboration with this property owner to develop a cost-effective, permanent eco-friendly solution to renovate the existing dilapidated, damp, cold solid sandstone Cumbrian coastal cottage by upgrading the property internally with breathable insulation and providing effective insulation and durable weatherproofing externally.

Quote from Customer

"When we bought Glen Cottage, we knew that we had invested in a unique Cumbrian property, being one of the oldest houses in the town of Allonby on the West Coast of Cumbria and owned for many years by the late eminent local artist, Percy Kelly. What we didn’t appreciate until we had stripped the dry lining from the walls was the unique features and characteristics of the sandstone walls. We wanted to keep these features and so investigated the possibility of using a thermal plaster. The house was very damp as the external render was cement and moisture was trapped, we decided to remove this and so replacing it with a ‘breathable’ plaster was essential, and we wanted to use materials that were sympathetic to how the wall should perform. We were very lucky to find Ecological Building Systems right on our doorstep! They are sole importers of the Diasen range and were able to advise all the relevant products to renovate the building. We decided to try two options, the Diathonite Evolution was sprayed internally, but externally because we were applying in the Autumn, we chose to hand apply when the weather was suitable. We chose different options for the finish, internally we used the smoothing render, Argacem HP with a natural paint and externally we used Diasen’s Cork Render, we are very pleased with both finishes and are delighted to have kept the undulations and characteristics of the walls. The house is going to be available for holiday lets and we hope that we have created a healthy, warm environment for our guests to enjoy the West Cumbrian coast"
