Main purpose

Used as a primer to prevent drying delays caused by tanning substances in the wood, to prevent discolouring ingredients coming through the finish.

Use it on

Wood containing active substances including MDF, OSB, cork, and pressure treated timber.

Overview

The Special Primer 117 can be used on interior or exterior timber for follow up treatment with Auro products. This can also be used on floors. When using Auro aqua products on woods which contain active ingredients the special primer 117 must be used as a primer. It is also recommended to be used on woods which cause drying delays.

Where to use it:

The Auro Special Primer 117 is a natural solvent-based primer for interior and exterior use on Hardwood timber, OSB, Cork, and timber as mentioned below. It is biocide free and made from natural materials and minerals.

Examples of wood which the Special Primer 117 MUST be used when following with Auro aqua products: Afzelia, Oak, Cork, Framire, Iroko, Chestnut, Cherry, Okume, Redwood, Cedar, larch, bamboo, OSB, MDF, thin-layer veneer, pressure treated substrates

Examples of wood which the Special Primer 117 is recommended to be used when following with Auro aqua products: Ash, Bangkirai, Red Cedar, Oregon Pine, Hemlock, Larch, Meranti, Merbau, Niangon, Pitch Pine, Teak.

The Auro Special Primer can be used on other types of timber but it is not necessary as alternative priming can be done.

It is available in 375ml, 750ml and 2.5 Litres and covers up to 12sq/m per litre.

What it does:

Some wood types are rich in active substances which can cause drying delays and/or discolouration of subsequent coatings of aqua products.

Auro Special Primer 117 forms a thin breathable film over the wooden surface to prevent the likelihood of bleeding and discolouration of subsequent coatings from active substances within the wood like tannins, glues, natural oils and dark pigments.

Why we Love it:

It is certified as safe for toys (DIN EN 71 Part 3) and saliva and sweat proof (DIN 53160). It is made from natural occurring materials and minerals and is biocide free. It is easy to use and is highly effective when used interior or exterior as it is UV and water resistant.

This product is a vegan friendly and impressively it is fully compostable.

How it Works:

It is transparent when dry with a slight honey coloured highlighting effect which emphasises the natural grain.

It will be dust dry after 8 hours and it can be recoated after 24 hours, plenty of ventilation should be allowed during the drying period as high humidity, low temperatures and insufficient air supply will slow down drying rates.

For poorly absorbing surfaces the Auro Special Primer 117 can be thinned by using the Auro Orange Oil 191 up to a maximum of 20%

Installation Guide

The Auro 117 is thinly applied to bare timber by brush, roller or by spraying. It can be thinned with a maximum 20% of the Orange oil 191. A very thin gloss film will have formed when dry. It should then get a very light sanding before being overcoated with Auro Aqua or Classic products after 24 hours. It is important that the sanding is very light, do not sand back to substrate as that will just remove the primer. The light sanding ensures a key is given for subsequent coats to stick to. The product will be dust dry after about 8 hours but should not be recoated until at least 24 hours after application. The coverage on the primer is approx. 12sq/m per litre.
