Retro EcoRoof is a high-performance pitched roof insulation system developed specifically for retrofit and refurbishment projects. It provides a flexible, moisture-safe solution for upgrading existing roofs while retaining as much of the original building fabric as possible.
Retro EcoRoof combines natural, breathable insulation materials with high-performance airtightness and windtightness membranes. Together, these components create a vapour-open roof build-up that improves thermal comfort, reduces uncontrolled air movement and supports the long-term health of the roof structure.
By addressing both winter heat loss and summer heat gain, Retro EcoRoof delivers year-round comfort. The inclusion of wood fibre insulation with high thermal mass helps slow heat transfer through the roof, reducing the risk of summer overheating while maintaining excellent insulation performance in colder conditions.
Retro EcoRoof is a flexible, breathable pitched roof insulation system for existing buildings, designed to improve thermal performance, airtightness and moisture safety while allowing roof upgrades from above, below or both.
Key Benefits
Flexible Retrofit Installation
Install from above, below or both to suit the project.
Fully Breathable Construction
Vapour-open build-up supports safe moisture movement and drying.
High Airtightness and Windtightness
Reduces convective heat loss and thermal bypass.
Reduced Summer Overheating
High thermal mass slows heat transfer through the roof.
Low-Carbon, Natural Insulation
Supports more sustainable retrofit outcomes.
Thermal Bridge Reduction
Rigid wood fibre boards improve insulation continuity across rafters.
Compatible with Existing Structures
Retain roof coverings, ceilings, rafters or purlins where required.
Long-Term Performance
Robust materials designed for durability and fabric health.
Retro EcoRoof can be installed from above or below

Pro Clima Dasatop installed from above using the sub-and-top method
Flexible natural insulation between rafters (Gutex Thermoflex, IndiBreathe Flex, Thermafleece Cosywool or Gramitherm)
Optional rigid wood fibre insulation above rafters to reduce thermal bridging (Gutex Multiplex Top or Gutex Multitherm)
Pro Clima Solitex Plus Reinforced windtight breathable roofing membrane
Counter battens fixed with Heco Topix screws
A retrofit solution where the external roof covering is removed, but the internal ceiling is retained. This approach is typically used when roof coverings are due for replacement but disruption to the internal spaces needs to be minimised.
- Pro Clima Dasatop installed from above using the sub-and-top method over existing timber rafters. Pro Clima Tescon Vana tape is used to seal overlaps.
- Flexible natural insulation between rafters (Gutex Thermoflex, IndiBreathe Flex, Thermafleece Cosywool or Gramitherm)
- Optional rigid wood fibre insulation above rafters to reduce thermal bridging (Gutex Multiplex Top or Gutex Multitherm, subject to available head height)
- Pro Clima Solitex Plus as the external breathable, windtight layer
- Counter battens fixed with Heco Topix screws. Horizontal battens and roof covering on top
A solution where the external roof covering is retained and the insulation upgrade is carried out internally. This option is particularly suitable for occupied buildings or where the roof covering is in good condition and should not be disturbed.
- Existing roof covering and membrane assessed
- Pro Clima Solitex Plus introduced internally where required to create a breathable layer beneath bitumen felt membranes, with overlaps sealed using Pro Clima Orcon F
- Flexible natural insulation fully-filling the space between rafters (Gutex Thermoflex, IndiBreathe Flex, Thermafleece Cosywool or Gramitherm)
- Rigid Gutex wood fibre insulation fixed to the underside of rafters
- Pro Clima Intello Plus installed as the internal airtight vapour control layer
- Horizontal battens
- Cewood wood wool boards fixed to battens
- Lime Green Solo skim or plaster finish with natural breathable paint
Where a modern draped breather membrane is present, the insulation can be installed up to the membrane. If counter battens and a taut membrane are already in place, the rafter zone can be fully filled with insulation.
A high-performance retrofit where both the roof covering and internal ceiling are removed, but existing rafters are retained. This approach is often chosen when a comprehensive upgrade is planned, and rapid weather-tightness is required.
- Rigid Gutex wood fibre insulation installed externally over rafters (fixed through vertical counter battens using Heco Topix screws)
- Pro Clima Solitex Plus installed directly over the rigid wood fibre insulation
- Vertical counter battens, followed by horizontal battens and roof covering
- Flexible natural insulation installed from below, fully filling the space between rafters (Gutex Thermoflex, IndiBreathe Flex, Thermafleece Cosywool or Gramitherm)
- Pro Clima Intello Plus as the internal airtight layer
- Internal battens
- Cewood Wood Wool boards with Lime Green Solo skim, or plasterboard with gypsum skim
