Description

Who it is for:

This training is aimed at professionals and home-owners alike, who are wanting to know more about heat recovering decentralised ventilation strategies and who are interested in taking an ecological and sustainable fabric first approach to creating better buildings.

This is an open CPD with participants joining from different organisations. We are offering virtual design reviews with individuals following the CPD to enable you to discuss the details of specific projects with our technical team.

What you learn:

  • Fabric first ventilation starts with the materials and plans used in combination with a well-sealed building.
  • Leaky, “well insulated” buildings lead to poorer IAQ, increased interstitial condensation risk and mould, poor comfort and increased energy usage.
  • Airtightness is not the Bad Guy!
  • Whether a building is airtight or not it must be adequately ventilated.
  • As building regulations require higher levels of airtightness, ventilation requirements must be adapted accordingly.
  • Retrofit of existing buildings can be particularly prone to reduced IAQ if whole house approach not taken.
  • Where mechanical systems are introduced, these must be installed and commissioned correctly and maintained in the long term.


What you will do:

You will receive industry leading training from highly experienced technical professionals with the opportunity to ask questions. We will show examples of decentralised ventilation units that will be covered in the training.

What happens on the day?

On arrival at the NSBRC, make your way to The Sustainability Theatre.

There will be a brief introduction, followed by the presentation, with the opportunity to ask questions throughout the presentation via the chat box. We will answer as many questions as possible at various points during the session and afterwards via email if we run short of time.

As this is an open CPD with participants joining from different organisations, we are offering virtual design reviews with individuals, to enable you to discuss specific projects in more detail with our technical team. What you will gain from attending this CPD

  • Participants will gain a knowledge in decentralised ventilation systems, how the system is designed, the key components, how the system operates and maintenance of the system.
  • The role ventilation systems play in a highly insulated, airtight home and how they complement each other.
  • How ventilation systems can improve the indoor air quality of a home for the occupants, while also saving on day to day expenses such as heating costs.
  • How ventilation systems can combat high humidity issues within a building and its fabric.


Points Gained

This CPD is a 1.5 hour stand-alone CPD providing 1 point towards maintaining your professional standard.   

Sustainable architecture is a rapidly developing area and is included on the list of the 10 mandatory RIBA core curriculum CPD topics. There is a requirement for a minimum of 2 hours to be spent on each of the 10 core topics.

The content of this CPD provides excellent background knowledge in the application of decentralised ventilation in retrofit and new build. Dave Judd

Technical Specification Advisor (BSc Hons, MSc)

Dave has extensive experience with energy efficiency retrofits and is well acquainted with the “fabric first” principles of integrating airtightness and insulation in both new-build and existing buildings. He has also worked within the domestic renewable energy sector, with the main emphasis on solar PV, solar thermal and biomass systems. He has a Degree in Environmental Science and an MSc in Architecture: Advanced Environment & Energy Studies and recently qualified as a Certified Passive House Tradesperson with the Passive House Institute. Outside of work, Dave enjoys trail running and cycling, growing vegetables and being sociable.
