Product Overview

Main purpose

A convenient airtight housing for sealing around electrical back boxes and their connecting cables and conduits

Use it on

Internal walls and floors in or on all common substrates found within timber frame, masonry, lightweight steel frame and CLT constructions. Especially where a service cavity in front of the air barrier is not possible.

Overview

Instaabox is a versatile enclosure for achieving airtightness around electrical back boxes wherever a service cavity in front of the air barrier is not possible.  Made from self-sealing polyethylene (PE), Instaabox requires no additional tapes or grommets to seal around penetrating cables or conduits. It can be used as an airtight lining to a normal chased-out hole in a solid wall or used to create an airtight recess in an airtight membrane or board. The backbox will be quickly made airtight with this easy-to-use accessory.

Where to use it

Instaabox can be used internally in a chased-out hole in a solid wall or on any airtight membrane or airtight board used in timber frame, lightweight steel frame or CLT constructions.  It is specifically for use where an electrical back box is required, but there is no service cavity in front of the airtightness layer for it to be installed into.

What it does

Instaabox is used as an airtight enclosure around electrical back boxes.  It is made from a self-sealing stretchy material so cables, conduits or screws penetrating the Instaabox are sealed airtight with no additional tape or airtight grommets being required.

The internal dimensions of Instaabox are 230mm x 130mm and it is 55mm deep. This is big enough to contain a double or triple socket back box or equivalent sized light switches.

The Instaabox has a 30mm wide lip around the edges which can be easily taped back to the airtightness layer to complete the airtightness around the back box.

Instaabox has perforated “punch points” where a hole can be easily punched out using a nail or sealant cartridge nozzle. Cables and conduits can then be passed through.

Why we love it

This versatile airtight accessory is ideal for use in tight spaces behind electrical fittings to stop unnecessary heat and air leakage.  It is an excellent option for maintaining airtightness at critical junction in buildings that do not have an integrated service cavity for running electrics.

Made from self-sealing polyethylene, feeding cables through it or securing the back box with screws (that penetrate the Instaabox), can be done easily without affecting the airtightness of the building.

Instaabox has attained excellent values in the hazardous substance test and has been tested according to the ISO 16000 evaluation scheme.

How it works

The 55mm deep airtight pocket provides a fully sealed backing to go behind domestic electrical back boxes commonly embedded into masonry, timber/airtight boards or airtight membranes.

It becomes an airtight lining for a chased-out area in a solid wall or forms a recessed airtight pocket in an airtight membrane or airtight board.

Features

  • Versatile, Effective and Robust
  • Made from self-sealing airtight polyethylene (PE)
  • Vapour resistant
  • Slim airtight housing
  • Simple Installation

Benefits

  • Hard wearing stretchy polyethylene material provides a super strong robust airtight housing around back boxes
  • Made from a self-sealing material that airtight seals around cables up to 20mm without tape, sealant or grommets
  • Size adjustable, Instaabox can be cut to make a smaller housing or two can be joined side-by-side (with Tescon Vana) to seal around larger back boxes
  • Maintains an airtight vapour resistant fitting in critical areas around electrics, avoiding unnecessary and possibly harmful loss of moist air into the building structure
  • A discreet airtightness solution works perfectly where the depth of wall or roof space is limited.
  • The translucent material provides visibility of wires and cables behind ensuring a safer and easier airtight installation

Installation Guide

Depending on the size and width of the electrical back boxes to be sealed, the Instaabox can be easily cut down vertically to shorten its width or two Instaaboxes can be cut vertically and put together to extend the overall length. Use Tescon Vana to seal the joins where Instaabox is cut so it remains airtight.

For installation into a solid wall, the masonry can be chased and cleaned out as usual for the fitting of electrical boxes.

For installation through an airtight membrane or airtight board like Finsa VapourStop, cut a 270mm x 140mm rectangular hole (horizontally or vertically) in the membrane or board.

Next, use a nail or conical pointed object to create holes in the Instaabox for the cables. A nozzle from a cartridge of sealant can be used. The holes should be approximately 60% of the diameter of the cable to achieve a tight airtight fit.

Position the electrical cables in their final location and then feed the cables through the holes created in the stretchy self-sealing Polyethylene material.

The Instaabox can then be pushed into the recess/hole to its full depth (up to 55mm) ready to receive the electrical back box or boxes.

The Instaabox incorporates a 30mm collar on all four sides, which should be sealed back to the face of the surrounding airtight substrate, membrane or board.

For solid walls, seal the collar of the Instaabox to the masonry using Contega Solido SL airtight sealing tape. Ensure the masonry substrate is sound for tape application and prime the area with Tescon RP Primer or Tescon Sprimer before applying the tape. This tape can be plastered over if required.

For installation on an airtight membrane or airtight board, use Tescon Vana airtight tape to seal back to the surrounding airtightness layer.
